Video CD

Video Compact Disc (VCD) has been promoted by Philips as a platform based on CD-ROM to play movies on TV. The result is Video-CD are readable on computers, CD-i players (fitted with Digital Video module) and on most standalone DVD players.

  1. VCD 2.0 standard
  2. HQ-VCD and XVCD formats

1. VCD 2.0 standard

VCD is a CD-i BridgeDisc which includes specific video CD parts, ISO 9660 file system and one or more MPEG video tracks.

The current VideoCD 2.0 standard is given by the White Book :

VCD 2.0 (1995) upgrades VCD 1.1 format (1993) adding interactive menus, high resolution stills and fast forward/rewind capabilities.

VCD is CD-ROM/XA Mode 2, Form 2, which can contain up to 74 minutes of MPEG-1 video. MPEG-1 stream is ISO standard IEC - 11172 compliant.

The first track of the Video CD always contains data specific to VCD such as the CD-i application program. This track is usually handled by the VCD authoring software like WinOnCD.

The ISO 9660 track can include any kind of data. Examples would be HTML pages or an Autorun file to auto-start Windows applications. The ISO file system can embed JOLIET file system to support Windows long file names.

Although VCD is said to be VHS quality, one rarely gets such quality with a homemade VCD.

2. HQ-VCD and XVCD formats

You may see or hear about other VCD formats which aren't really standard so they aren't readable on most DVD players:
