I encountered several issues installing Windows 98 SE mainly due to old real mode CD-ROM driver, so I've written this page to ensure a problem-free 6 step installation process. Of course, some items are particular to my computer.
Check there's no CD-ROM driver invoked in autoexec.bat nor config.sys
(on C:).
If there's one (for example: IDECD.SYS) in real mode (16bits)
which isn't supported by Windows 98, 32bits access will be disabled with at
least two known issues : no long file names access for CD-ROMs and conflict
with Pinnacle PCTV.
Start with Windows 98 boot floppy disk and format target partition with /s
switch (for example format e: /s).
Start installation from the CD (for example: Q:install /is) with
/is switch to avoid scandisk.
Install Nvidia 6.31 drivers (available at NVIDIA).
Install PCTV drivers. Pass PCTV Assistant, if everything OK then
install all patches
(pctv4.02s, pclepim1 and ppe104) otherwise
go to Pinnacle Systems
France forum or to US
forum (this one is more reactive and helpful).
Install Creative SB Live! from the Dell CD without DOS drivers installation (unless you really need them for old games). Check sound, particularly from microphone and if everything OK finish installation with all drivers and software you need.
