Advanced Title generation using Swish!

  1. Building a title
  2. Star-Wars effect
  3. "The Matrix" effects
  4. Some tricks and considerations
  5. Conclusion

Most programs for video editing have poor or very limited title generating capabilities. Placing text on an image and fading or sliding it in or out can be done with most programs. But what if you want to make titling like the famous Star wars or The Matrix titles ?

In order to do this you will need a tool like Adobe After-FX. Unfortunately this tool is very expensive and, while very powerful, not easy to learn. That puts it beyond the reach of much home-movie makers.

This article is written based upon version 1.51 that does not have the AVI exporting capabilities. The new version 2.0 does have this feature and many other possibilities.

Building a title

First if all you need to find out what pixel aspect ratio you are using in your video.Normally for a NTSC-DV stream this is 720 by 480 pixels at 29.97 frames per second (FPS). For a PAL stream the FPS is 25. So you need to set up Swish to generate this kind of stream. Unfortunately it is impossible to create the 29.97, so set it to 30.

Next step is to start composing your title. Depending on what you want to do, you can either draw against a white background or a black background (depends what your editing program cues on to mix video streams).

The program has a couple of built in examples that will show you how to build certain effects. It's just a matter of drawing text and shapes and then setting animation paths. The whole thing is orchestrated on a timeline equivalent to that of your editing program. Swish will allow you to import sound files (WAV MP3 etc.) in your project. That way you can synchronize your title to music. However, when exporting you should take out the music. The resulting avi file will be smaller and you will mix in the sound in the video editing program anyway. You can preview your work eiter step by step or view the whole title .

Taking a look at the samples provided will teach you a lot. The Help system also provides some step by step examples. Just give an example of how easy it is to make spectacular titles, I will give 2 examples here

Star-Wars effects

The granddaddy of all film titles. This is an effect that is pretty easy to make. Just a bunch of text lines that slide from bottom to top and change scale in the progress.
